I had a yen to do a sunrise or sunset today. Timing was tough with my commute, and I got this shot a little later than was advisable. I'm glad I have 358 more days to try and do some better shots. This is a starting point, anyway.

This is a photo of an "ordinary thing" I see every weekday -- my Christmas cactus. It sits in my office, largely ignored, blooming beautifully several times a year. I enjoy the flowers and do my best to remember to water it (cactus do need water, I've learned through experience).

This picture does an amazing job of capturing just how beautiful the blooms of a succulent can be. I love the color and light on the flower petals, as well as the detail in the veins. You can find beauty in everyday things...

Sometimes in the midst of winter, all I can think about is being on the beach. Snow was the closest my flip flops could get. I like this photo for a couple of reasons: 1) the juxtaposition of the sandals and the snow, 2) the lighting (the shadow is from a street light, not me), 3) the slogan on the shoes says "ocean minded." Today was a big day for our household: the beginning of the US Census Bureau Boston Region's road tour. The tour commenced at the USS Constitution with a vehicle christened "Democracy." I was lucky to be invited to attend the ceremony with Mike.

Clearly the photo for today is not of that scene. I did get some very nice photos of the event (posted below). My photo for today is of my mouse pad at work. I use this every single day, it is part of my work flow and has been on my desk since the summer. Mike and his coworkers have been working hard toward Census Day (April 1, 2010) for several years; the mouse pad is a daily reminder of his hard work.

The recognition of how an every day object ties into a big event was important and significant to me. The larger message (in my mind) is that there are little things in our every day lives that help shape -- or reflect -- a bigger cause.

Now, on to those pictures from the road tour!

Welcome to the road tour!

The third day straight of snow in New England brought more photo opportunities. We were heading out for some errands and Mike looked so nice against the snowy white backdrop. He's so handsome, my honey...

We were late getting the bird food out this winter. We finally remembered after the snow storm on January 1st. I was delighted to see lots and lots of birds flocking to the feeder to enjoy some sustenance. This little guy was taking a break from the food but watching carefully for his next opportunity at some chow.

This was the first day of a new year and the first day of my photo project. The snow on the mountain laurel struck me as pretty. It never ceases to amaze me how fresh plants can look with a delicate coating of snow.
